Survey on Perspectives of Pursuing a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders

ABSTRACT: Purpose: The communication sciences and disorders (CSD) field has a critical shortage of PhD students and faculty. This study examined master’s in speech-language pathology and doctorate of audiology students’ and faculty’s perspectives regarding reasons students do or do not pursue a PhD as well as students’ perceptions of a faculty career and lifestyle. Additionally, students’ responses were compared to SLPs’ responses from Madison, Guy, and Koch (2004). Method: Two online surveys were sent to 279 students and faculty, of which 73 replied. Results: Students almost evenly responded that yes they planned or no they did not plan to obtain a PhD.
